LOCAL NEWS — Early Sunday morning, National Weather Service (NWS) officials issues a Flash Flood Watch for 10 Alabama counties as well as three Tennessee counties including Moore, Franklin, and Lincoln through Monday evening.

A watch means that the potential for local severe flooding exist based on the current forecast. Should flooding become imminent in Moore County, weather officials may escalate that severe weather event to a warning.

According to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) rain gauge at Tims Ford Dam, our area received around three inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours and three to five more inches were expected through Monday evening.

NWS officials predict widespread showers and thunderstorms in Moore County that will generate multiple rounds of heavy rainfall that may cause already swollen creeks to overflow. As always, those living near Main Street, Wiseman Park, and portions Highway 129 should be especially aware.

Nearby Tullahoma experienced significant rainfall on Saturday and North Jackson Street and multiple side roads showed visible flooding. Coffee County Rescue Squad and the Hickerson Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call at George Dickel on Saturday where rapidly rising flood waters covered much of the road in front of the Visitors Center and part of the distilling area.

Local Public Safety official remind locals to avoid driving through flooded waters. Just 12 inches of moving flood water can sweep a car off the road. Standing water sits on numerous local roads, especially Highway 55 between Lynchburg and Tullahoma, causing vehicle to hydroplane. Drivers should use extreme caution especially overnight once visibility decreases.
