STATE EDUCATION NEWS — A safety group featured in The Washington Post and Good Morning America recently named Austin Peay State University in Clarksville as the Safest Campus in Tennessee. The group analyzed over 1,000 colleges using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security and FBI’s Uniform Crime Report to arrive at their results.

The group used per capita numbers for violent crimes, property crimes, hate crimes, as well as domestic violence data to arrive at their rankings. Data is gathered from a span of three years rather than a year-by-year basis. Therefore, the data in this study comes from information between 2017–2019.

Established in 1927, the public university in Clarksville is named for then-sitting Governor Austin Peay. Their mascot is the Governors, which is also a nod to Peay. Other southern schools to make this list include Alabama’s Auburn University at Montgomery, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of Kentucky, and the University of New Orleans.
