LOCAL NEWS –– The Moore County Historical Society and the Moore County Archives announced last week that they will extend the application deadline for the Moore County Founding Family Certification Program until Monday, February 14.

Founders established Moore County in 1871 and the Moore County Historical Society launched the Founding Families Certification Program as part of Lynchburg’s Bicentennial and Moore County’s Sesquicentennial celebrations.

Applications can be picked up at the Moore County Archives or requested by sending an email to George Stone at the Moore County Historical Society at [email protected]. There is a $15, non-refundable fee for each individual ancestor that is submitted.

To qualify for a Founding Families Certificate, the applicant must be directly descended from an ancestor who was in Moore County no later than the 1880 State Census. Proof of ancestry and residency may be shown by official records such as birth, death, marriage, probate or will, church, cemetery, funeral or obituary, land records, deeds, tax, court, military, newspaper, Bible, old private documents, county histories, and biographical records for each generation, including proof for the applicant.

Current Tennessee residency is not necessary. If your application is based on a previously approved application (such as
a parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt, etc.), it is not necessary to resubmit documentation for overlapping generations. You need only send proof of descent for generations needed to link you to the previously approved applicant.

All application and verifying materials become the property of the Moore County Historical Society. Be sure to send a photocopy of all pertinent materials. Do not send original records.•
