Unofficial Lynchburg ambassador John Bates dies at the age of 90

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — John W. Bates, age 90 of Lynchburg, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2023, at his residence.

He was born in Tullahoma on February 21, 1932, to the late Leonard and Hallie (Mitchell) Bates. Before his retirement, he worked at the Moore County School System for 25 years in the maintenance department. An avid farmer, he enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and in his younger years, John coached softball. Considered an unofficial Lynchburg Ambassador by many, his greatest love and most favorite thing to do was come to the Lynchburg square every morning and sit on the bench to meet and welcome people from near and far. John served as a deacon and song leader at Hickory Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeweldine Bates; and 10 siblings. John is survived by his loving children, Denise (Chris) Dye, Adrian Bates, and Ronnie (Tracy) Bates; grandchildren, Dawn (Todd) Kirby, Erica Fanning, Jeremy (Melonie) Bates, Jamie (Mark) Sullenger, Ryan (Tiffany) Bates, Jill (Travis) Rael, Allyson (Coby) Hopkins, and Kristen (Chris) Childress; as well as 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. on Thursday, January 5 at Jennings-Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Funeral Services will follow at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Jennings-Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lynchburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please make memorial donations to Lynchburg City Cemetery. •
