Local vet hosts Rabies Clinic on Saturday

State law requires that all puppies older than six month have a current rabies vaccination. The Lynchburg Veterinary Hospital will offer discounted pet vaccines for both dogs and cats on Saturday.

LOCAL NEWS — There is nothing sadder or more preventable than losing a pet to rabies.

That’s why the Lynchburg Veterinary Hospital (LVH) will offer discounted rabies vaccinations on Saturday, April 17 from 8 a.m. until noon.

Rabies affects all mammals including humans and their beloved pets. In Tennessee, raccoons, bats, and skunks most often carry the virus that causes rabies. They carry it in their saliva, so it is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. Once symptoms begin, there is no treatment for rabies, and it is almost always fatal.

State law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies. The Tennessee Anti-Rabies Law (TCA § 68-8-101 – 115) states that it is unlawful for any person to own, keep or harbor and dog or cat six months of age or older that has not been vaccinated against rabies. Failure to do so is a Class C misdemeanor. Some rabies vaccinations only need to be administered every three years while others require an annual booster. If you are uncertain as to which vaccine your pet last received, you should check with their veterinarian.

On April 17, LVH officials will offer discounted rabies vaccines for both dogs and cats. There is no need to make an appointment and staff will administer shots while you sit in your vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. Each vaccination will cost $10. According to LVH officials, there will not be a countywide rabies clinic this years as there has been in previous years.
