LOCAL EVENT NEWS — It only took two weeks.
On Wednesday, the organizers of the Lynchburg 9/11 Memorial 5K closed registration as it met its 200 participant goal. This means they’ve already raised nearly $6,000 for their chosen non-profit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families. Didn’t make the registration deadline to run? No problem. You can still help the Jack Daniel’s Fire Brigade and Metro Moore Fire Department honor those we lost of 9/11 with a Remembrance Parade immediately following the event at around 10 a.m.
“I’m hoping to see the streets of our downtown area covered with supporters wearing red, white and blue beaming with American pride,” said local fire fighter and event organizer John LaCook.
They are asking all current and former firefighters, law enforcement, and EMS to run/walk the event in their gear as a sign of respect and admiration for the lives lost that day. They’d also like to invite all current and former military to participate in full ruck gear in both the 5K and the parade.
“This is not a requirement, of course, but it would be awesome to see,” said MMCFD’s John LaCook. “Our brothers and sisters made their sacrifices in full gear, so this would be an awesome way to honor them.”
On race day, participants will line up just off the historic Lynchburg Square near the Jack Daniel Distillery Visitor’s Center. Prizes will be awarded to Overall Male, Overall Female, as well as first place finishers by age division. Pre-race packets can be picked up on Friday, September 10 from 5-7 p.m. at the Lynchburg Gazebo.
