School budget, teacher retirement on Tuesday’s Metro School Board agenda

LOCAL NEWS — The Metro School Board will meet in a regular session meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Moore County Department of Education Building located behind Lynchburg Elementary. Usually the Metro School Board meets on the second Monday of the month. Director Moorehead rescheduled this month’s meeting in order to allow extra time to work with the general purpose budget.

In addition to the budget, the Board will discuss a request from National MS Society to allow Bike to Jack and Back riders to camp overnight at Lynchburg Elementary School on Saturday, October 16 through Sunday, October 17. Cyclist participating in the benefit ride have camped there in previous years without issue, according to Director Moorehead.

Director Moorehead will also present the Board with a retirement notice from MCHS teacher and varsity girls basketball coach Herb Horton. Horton plans to retire at the end of the 2020-21 school year, according to his letter submitted to Director Moorehead on April 2.

During his director’s report, Moorehead will discuss his annual performance evaluation and give an ESSER funding update. ESSER stands for Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. Congress set aside approximately $13.2 billion of the CARES Act to address the impact that COVID-19 has had, and continues to have, on elementary and secondary schools across. The Moore County school system will receive a percentage of Tennessee’s allotted funds.

All Metro School Board meetings are open to the general public and may be attended in person or remotely. If you would like to attend the meeting virtually, send an email to Director Moorehead ([email protected]) by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27. The MCDOE Building is located at 308 Mechanic Street North. •
