Man struck by vehicle, dies on Highway 41A in Moore County

MOORE COUNTY, Tenn. — A 63 year old man died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 41A inside Moore County.

According to the preliminary report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet Equinox SUV traveling east on U.S. Highway 41A near Carr Creek struck the pedal-cyclist at 10:24 p.m. The SUV collided with 63 year old Boyce Smelcer, who was standing stationary in the roadway facing oncoming traffic. Smelcer died at the scene.

Neither the driver of the SUV, Rita Colbert, age 64, of Tullhoma, nor the passenger of the SUV, Russell Keyser, age 55, of Tullahoma, suffered any injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts and there are no pending charges or investigations, according to the THP report.

Moore County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Moore County EMS, and the Tullahoma Police Department responded to the scene in addition to THP.

According to his obituary, Smelcer was a native of Shelbyville.

His parents, Grant Alexander Smelcer Jr. and Martha Joy Holman Smelcer and his siblings, Bobby Smelcer and Kathryn Pilkington preceded him in death. He is survived by his siblings, Bryce Smelcer (Billie Jean) of Shelbyville, Grant Alexander Smelcer III (Doris) of Watertown, Kristy Matheson of Tullahoma, Katrina Newman (Mike) of Shelbyville and Karen Harris (Bobby) of Shelbyville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A reception will be held on Saturday, August 27 from 2-5 p.m. at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home located at 401 North Jackson Street in Tullahoma. •
