LOCAL SPORTS — A rowdy, loud student section probably can’t swing a high school basketball game but they definitely keep the energy up and inspire players to bring their A game. The Moore County gang down on the right side of the home bleachers needs to bring the noise on Friday to help lift the Raiders to another crucial district win. Moore County (6-16, 2-1) will play their district rival the Huntland Hornets (6-14, 2-3) on Friday in Lynchburg.

This will be the second match up of the Raiders and Hornets in 2021-22 season. Moore County lost 79-59 in Huntland on January 11. With referees taking a “let them play” approach in the game, the Raiders and Hornets tangled up under the boards and fought for more than was comfortable for jump balls. It resulted in a tense, on the edge of out of control rivalry game. To win on Friday, Moore County will need to play smart, controlled basketball.

Moore County comes into the Huntland game hot off a 64-37 win against Cornersville in Lynchburg last Friday. The Raiders jumped out to a early lead against the Bulldogs and the starters never took their foot of the gas. The Raiders doubled the Bulldogs 16 first half points and saved their big scoring period for the third — out scoring Cornersville by 12. Senior Will Harder led for the Raiders with 22 points followed by sophomore Keller Morey with 14 and senior Colton Bateman with 10.

Huntland comes into the game after a blow out win at Cornersville. The Hornets beat the Bulldogs on Wednesday 64-37 in a game that was never close to improve their district record to 2-3. Fayetteville continues to lead in District 8 play with a perfect 5-0 record followed by Moore County, Cornersville, and Huntland with two district wins each.

Tip off will happen immediately following the girls game. For those who can’t attend in person, the Moore County Sports Network will broadcast the game on the NFHS Network or you can get live score updates throughout the game at The Lynchburg Times Facebook page. •
