Lynchburg native Matthew Syler dies at age 42

LOCAL OBITUARY | Matthew Clayton Syler, age 42, of Huntsville AL, passed away on June 6, 2023, from a cardiac event.

According to his family, Matthew’s death was completely unexpected, and they are both shocked and deeply saddened.


Born on January 27, 1981, to Kerry and Marie (Lunn) Syler of Lynchburg, Matthew’s love for his family was evident to all who knew him well.

In addition to his parents, Matthew is survived in death by his beloved wife, Britni, and their two beautiful children, Jacob (8) and Adalyn (3); siblings Leanne (Dirk) of Lynchburg and Kurt (Megan) of Greensboro, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Matthew graduated from Moore County High School in 1999, where he was passionate about youth ministry and football. He excelled at both. He served as an officer in Tag Camp Youth Group and was named a Mr. Football Finalist during his senior season.

After graduating high school, Matthew moved to Huntsville to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of Alabama Huntsville. During his years at UAH, Matthew was a valued member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and was elected to the officer position of Marshal.

Beginning in college, Matthew embarked on a career in the flooring industry and made a significant impact on the industry throughout his remarkable career, He founded his own company, Syler Group, in 2017 and served as its CEO. He is also remembered as the founder of Bella Flooring Group and for his contributions while working at Beaulieu.

A man of deep faith, Matthew devoted himself to supporting mission work in Haiti. He will be remembered as a good man, a faithful husband, a dedicated father, servant to others, and a hard-working entrepreneur. The impact he made on countless lives will be cherished for years to come, according to his family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 17 at Mayfair Church of Christ located at 1095 Carl T Jones Dr SE in Huntsville.

Visitation will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with funeral services to follow. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery located at 202 Maple Hill St SE in Huntsville at 3:30 p.m. •
