Former Raider standout Sam Scott dies at age 80

LOCAL OBITUARY | Sam Scott, age 80 of Lynchburg, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at his residence.

Sam was born in Nashville, on June 23, 1945, to the late Samuel Scott, Sr. and Emily Gore Dinkins. Sam was a farmer and a welder. When he was not working, he loved to fish, hunt, play cards along with any kind of game to fuel his competitive nature, and hunt for arrow heads. Sam and his loving wife, Joyce, were married on September 23, 1967, giving them fifty-eight years of marriage. Sam was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Sam is preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Jimmy Harper, John Doug Harper; and sister-in-law, Linda Robinson Harper.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Scott; children, Toby (Mary) Scott, Dana (Curt) Watkins; grandchildren, Brandon Scott, Justin Scott, Blake Barrett, Brooke Barrett; great-grandchild, Jase Barrett; sister, Patricia Alexander; niece, Cheryl Hall, Pam Case, Terri Mallard, Christy Nunley, Holly Hardison; nephew, Lonnie Lynch, Brian Harper, Zach Harper, Troy Harper; sisters-in-laws, Linda Harper, Gerry Harper; brothers-in-law, Jim Alexander, Vincent Harper, and Wayne Harper.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Jennings-Moore-Cortner Funeral Home located in Lynchburg. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 6 at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Brother Matthew Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Lynchburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Moore County High School Athletics. •
