LOCAL NEWS | Education — According to the Tennessee Department of Education and Director of Schools Chad Moorehead, Moore County High School’s Class of 2019 earned the top ACT score for Tennessee’s South Central District. Moore County came is first with an average composite score of 21.7. Rounding out the top five were: Fayetteville (20.6), Marshall County (20.6), Tullahoma (20.4), and Lincoln County (20.1).

It’s outstanding news and one that allows the Metro School Board to check off a goal, according to Director Moorehead.

“The board’s strategic plan set a goal of having an average ACT composite score of 21 on the ACT by the year 2020,” Moorehead said. “The class of 2017 had an average composite score of 18.9.  The class of 2018 had an average composite score of 20.6. The Moore County class of 2019 has a composite ACT score of 21.7.”

The South Central District is made up of 16 school districts including Moore, Bedford County, Coffee County, Fayetteville City, Franklin County, Giles County, Hickman County, Lawrence County, Lewis County, Lincoln County, Manchester City, Marshall County, Maury County, Perry County, Tullahoma City, and Wayne County. 

Moore County’s score earned them twelfth in the entire state of Tennessee. Germantown came in number one with an average score on 26.3.

According to a state Department of education press release, a total of 63,829 students from Tennessee’s 2019 graduating class took the ACT, earning an average composite score of 20. This represents a 98 percent participation rate, which is an all-time high in the state. Of those students, 41.7 percent earned a score of 21 or higher, making them eligible for the HOPE scholarship.
