Library picks What Happen to Nina as August book club read

LYNCHBURG — They meet the last Friday of each month and on Friday, August 29 the Moore County Library Brown Bag Book Club will discuss Dervla McTiernan’s What Happened to Nina?

The book is a gripping psychological thriller that dissects the aftermath of a young woman’s disappearance and the tangled web of power, privilege, and perception that follows. When Nina, a bright, spirited college student, vanishes during a weekend trip with her boyfriend Simon, two families are left to grapple with very different versions of the truth. As suspicion tightens around Simon, the narrative delves into the contrasting reactions of Nina’s working-class parents and Simon’s wealthy, well-connected family, who seem determined to control both the story and the outcome.

Set against the backdrop of a small Vermont town, the novel explores not only the emotional devastation of loss but also how public opinion – especially fueled by social media – can warp justice. McTiernan masterfully builds tension by layering perspectives, exposing how grief, fear, and entitlement can collide in explosive ways. Each character’s motivations are called into question, and the line between victim and perpetrator blurs in chilling fashion. The story is as much about what happened to Nina as it is about what happens to those left behind.

What elevates the novel is McTiernan’s unflinching gaze at systemic inequalities and her ability to write flawed, emotionally raw characters who feel startlingly real. The pacing is tight, the stakes high, and the moral ambiguity unsettling in the best way. As the investigation spirals and secrets unravel, readers are forced to confront uncomfortable truths about justice, gender, and how far people will go to protect their own. What Happened to Nina? is not just a thriller—it’s a timely meditation on the stories we tell to survive, and the silences we impose to maintain power.

The library’s book club welcomes all readers – whether you’re a longtime member or just want to drop in for this one. Copies of the book are available at the front desk while supplies last.
