Historical Society meets this Sunday

LYNCHBURG — It was once the first permanent home of the Moore County Courthouse and on Sunday, Tom Harrison will discuss the historic Lynchburg Church of Christ on Main Street during it’s November meeting.

Harrison serves as the current pastor of the Lynchburg Church of Christ.  The historic building was the first permanent Moore County Court House from shortly after Moore County was formed until a fire destroyed it in 1883.  The present Church of Christ was erected in 1875.  One of the more noted preachers from this church was Thomas Shaw, who led the congregation when it was chartered.  Members of this church were also founders of the Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Nashville.

According to the Heritage of Moore County, the Lynchburg Church of Christ helped establish other churches in both County Line, Mulberry and Liberty Hill communities. Granville Lipscomb, the brother of David Lipscomb, who founded Nashville’s David Lipscomb University, also once spoke there.

The Moore County Historical Society will meet on Sunday, November 9 at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Lynchburg. Harrison will speak on the topic, A History of the Historic Lynchburg Church of Christ.   The meeting is open to the public and all are welcome.  For further information contact Michael Northcutt at mbncutt@yahoo.com or phone 931-434-5797 or George Stone a georgestone@cafes.net or phone 931-581-2621. •
