CORNERVILLE, Tenn. — The explosive Raiderettes offense isn’t often held to single digit points in any given quarter but on Tuesday in Cornersville, they scored just four in the first and seven in the second to go into the locker room trailing by 16 at the half.
Abbie Bateman and Ellie Carter managed the Raiderettes lone first period baskets on Tuesday while Cornersville’s Emma Kate Dunivan and Sara Kate Walker combined for 11 of the Lady Bulldogs 15 points. Moore County trailed 15-4 at the end of the first eight minutes.
Bella Tucker got going in the second — scoring four while Carter managed two more and Ally Sharpe swished one from the line. Both Sharpe and Emma Dye — the Raiderettes high scoring duo — were kept quiet in the first half.
Moore County went in the locker room trailing by 16 points, 27-11.
Second half comeback falls short
But the Raiderettes fought back — scoring 21 in the third period while holding the Lady Bulldogs to just 12. They closed the gap to just seven points at the end of the third thanks in part to Emmeree Greenway who came alive for seven points including two shots from the perimeter. Carter added another five in the Raiderettes big quarter and Dye added four more. Sharpe swished a long three and Bateman managed two more. Heading into the fourth, Moore County trailed, 39-32.
The Raiderettes matched Cornersville point-for-point in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to make up the first half deficit. At the final buzzer, the Raiderettes lost 56-49 and dropped to 1-2 in District 9A play.
Emma Dye came back strong in the second half and led with 11 points. Emmeree Greenway and Ellie Carter followed with nine points each. Other contributing Raiderettes were Ally Sharpe (6 point), Bella Tucker (6 points), Abbie Bateman (6 points), and Harley Hart (2 points).
Moore County will move on to their first season match up against perennial rivals, the Huntland Hormet on Friday in Lynchburg. The Hornet are currently 1-1 in district play — losing to Cornersville on January 13 and beating Fayetteville on January 16. •
