Review: Sundrop Shoppe now serves breakfast

TULLAHOMA — They’ve become renowned locally for their chicken salad, French onion soup, and dreamy soda fountain creations. Now, the Sundrop Shoppe and Luncheonette in Tullahoma serves breakfast all day, six days a week.

The charming, local eatery is a southern slice of nostalgia. Outside the bright brick facade, and classic striped awning adds to Atlantic Street’s main street appeal. Inside, the restaurant feels like an old-fashioned soda shoppe and lunch counter with walk-up seating along a marble counter top as well as cafe-style seating both inside and out. Hardwood floors, an exposed brick wall, stamped metal ceiling, and a bright Sundrop-inspired painting by local artist, Annie Rone, complete the bright, cheery interior. Shelves filled with Sundrop memorabilia and souvenirs also line one wall.

The new breakfast menu includes three cleverly named signature items. The Queen City Platter offers two fresh eggs, toast, plus you choice of meat –Applewood smoked bacon, Tennessee Pride sausage, or grilled ham. There’s also the Big Springs Breakfast Sandwich featuring two grilled pieces of bread, Swiss and American cheese, along with your choice of egg, meat, and cheese.

We tried the T-Town Special. The made-from-scratch buttermilk pancakes were a mouth full of light, fluffy perfection with just the right amount of butter. Our eggs over medium were also cooked just right and it was a pleasant surprise to see our favorite Louisiana Hot Sauce on the table.

We were lucky to have one of the restaurant’s co-owners, Paige Prescott serve us. On this particular morning, she and her staffed busied about making sure the Tullahoma High School Lady Cats got a good breakfast before heading to the state basketball tournament. Despite that large group, Prescott and her staff took time to greet and talk to each table and answer questions. The service felt friendly but unobtrusive. As we dined, we overheard a couple from Chattanooga say they’d traveled to Tullahoma that morning just to try the place.

In addition to breakfast, the restaurant also serves lunch six days a week including items like homemade pimento cheese, a blackened chicken Caesar salad, and hot sandwiches like their pot roast French dip. They also boast an almost 15-item soda fountain and sweet treats menu that offers things like a Cherry Sundrop Float, classic banana split, and Miss Barbara’s Orange Cream Cake.
