LYNCHBURG — On Monday night, the Moore County School Board voted unanimously to allow the MCHS Raiderettes softball booster to move ahead with their plans to upgrade the backstop at Moore County High School.
“Our plan is to remove the fencing between the home and visitors’ dugout,” MCMS Raiderettes Coach Tyler Hatfield told the Board via email.
“The tall poles nets are attached to will stay. We will dig and pour a footer for a three high block with a cap block, just like what is installed at the baseball field. We will then paint the wall to match our current colors and install padding directly behind home plate.”
The varsity and middle school coaches will spearhead the project, and it will be funded by donations and the Raiderettes Softball Boosters.
According to MCMS Coach Tyler Hatfield, the new backstop is necessary for both infrastructure and safety reasons. They’ll remove old fencing that is failing and add padding for player safety. Once completed, the softball backstop will look very similar to baseball backstop, according to Coach Hatfield.
Carrie Barnett, Kaleigh Hatfield, Jammie Cashion, Ed Cashion, and Board Chair Tanya Vann all voted in favor of the upgrades.
The Moore County School Board meets every second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. The location varied between the MCHS Library, and the Central Office located behind Lynchburg Elementary.
Member Hatfield requested that the January 12 meeting be moved to a different date due to a conflict with the MCMS basketball program’s away games, but there was no official motion for the request. Should it be rescheduled, we will update readers as soon as possible. •
