Spring turkey season opens Saturday across Tennessee

Spring turkey season opens Saturday, April 11, and runs through Sunday, May 24 — all 95 Tennessee counties are in play, including Moore and surrounding areas.

Hunters are allowed one male turkey per day, with a two-bird season limit. Only one of those can be a jake. All hens are off limits, including bearded hens. An adult gobbler can be identified by white barring all the way to the tip of the wing feathers, tail feathers of uniform length, a beard longer than six inches, or a spur at least a half-inch long.

Shooting hours run from 30 minutes before legal sunrise through legal sunset. Legal equipment includes shotguns loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller, and all bow types including crossbows. Sighting devices are permitted, but nothing that uses artificial light to locate wildlife.

One reminder worth flagging before you head out: TWRA’s “Tag Before You Drag” rule requires hunters to tag their bird in the field before moving it. The easiest way to do that is through the TWRA on the Go app, which handles e-tagging and harvest reporting in one step — even without cell service. If you’re going old school without a phone, use the temporary transportation tag printed on your license and complete check-in online at GoOutdoorsTennessee.com or at a manned check station by midnight the same day you harvest.

If you pull a banded bird, contact information for reporting it is printed on the band.

Some exceptions apply on public land and Wildlife Management Areas. Full regulations are in the 2025-26 Tennessee Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Guide, available at TWRA offices, license agents, and online at tnwildlife.org. Licenses can be purchased at GoOutdoorsTennessee.com. •
