LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — Smoke will return to the Holler in October and this year’s Jack Daniel’s World Invitational Barbecue promises to be the largest and most exciting in the past couple of years with 23 international teams returning to compete after two years of travel complications created by the pandemic.

Lynchburg’s annual event always proves to be a colorful one but adding teams from Australia to Italy back into the mix will be sure to kick it up a notch. In particular, international teams always add a bit of pizazz to the Parade of Teams that happens on the Friday before the Barbecue. As any local can tell you, the unofficial kick off to the event is worth the trip to Lynchburg as close to 100 teams will parade from Wiseman Park through the historic Lynchburg Square on their way to Barbecue Hill throwing favors along the way like Lynchburg’s own little Mardi Gras parade.

To qualify to compete in The Jack – considered by many to be the Super Bowl of competitive barbecue competitions – teams must win a state championship with at least 25 other teams competing or any other competition of 50 teams or more. There are also several Kansas City Barbecue Society event winners who earn an automatic invitation including winners from this year’s Memphis in May, The American Royal World Series of Barbecue Open, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. And, of course, last year’s winner, Gettin’ Basted, will return to defend their crown. The final competitors were selected during a blind drawing of all eligible teams last week.

Teams will compete in seven categories : Pork Ribs, Pork Shoulder/Butts, Beef Brisket, Chicken, Dessert, Cook’s Choice and Jack Daniel’s Sauce.

2022 team will include:
