LYNCHBURG — The Moore County Historical Society will meet next on November 10 at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Lynchburg. November’s guest speakers will be Don Cauwels and Mike Northcutt the authors of Jack Daniel’s Historical Memorabilia and Rarities – the unofficial guide to collecting items related to the distillery.

The two met around 1980, while Mike and his wife, Beth, owned an antique store on the south side of the Shelbyville square. Don and his wife, Diane, had recently relocated to the area from California and purchased an antique Jack Daniel’s whiskey jug from Mike.  The duo boasts a combined over 85 years of knowledge in collecting and authenticating Jack Daniel and Lem Motlow artifacts.

Over the years, the couples have traveled all over together in search of old Jack Daniel jugs, bottles, and other memorabilia. They have met other enthusiasts from all over the world and made many friends.  Over the course of the last year, the two couples finally put their book idea to work.  Designing the cover and taking all of the pictures themselves, the book was published in 2024.  It showcases a chronological pictorial description of Jack Daniel, Lem Motlow, and Gunter (a former whiskey distributor for the brand) artifacts from the 1860s through the 1960s.

During the meeting, Don and Mike will be available for dating items and will offer appraisals.

The meeting is free and open to the general public.  For further information contact Michael Northcutt at [email protected] or phone 931-434-5797 or George Stone a [email protected] or phone 931-581-2621. •
