FLAT CREEK, Tenn. — Over the weekend, a barbecue miracle happened in Flat Creek.
As nine different barbecue teams from around southern, middle Tennessee gathered at the Flat Creek Fire Department to spend several hours slow cooking Boston butts for a fundraiser to benefit Hannah Peels, Barking Pig pit master and local veterinarian Dr. Bryant Morton looked at the nearly 300 cuts of meat in front of him and asked what any self-respecting professional cooker would ask: do we have enough rub?
That’s when he looked at Raymond Meadows and said, “You’re familiar with the story of the loaves and fishes from The Bible right? There will be enough rub.”
And indeed there was. Based on the hard work of Dr. Morton’s team as well as Ray Ray’s Smokehouse, 931 BBQ, Purdom’s BBQ, Tyson BBQ Team, Flat Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Rowdy Ranch Catering, Uncle Sonny’s Bar B Que, Fat, Drunk, and Stupid Competition BBQ Team as well as many, many community volunteers, the group raised over five-figures for Hannah Peels – the special needs daughter of Gary and Lori Peels. The Flat Creek couple died tragically in April in a head-on collision on Highway 82. {To read our full coverage of the wreck, click here.}
“It was a wonderful example of people coming together for a good cause and good things happening,” Dr. Morton stated following the event.
