Long before bio pics about Freddy Mercury and Elton John ala Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman were all the range, the story of Loretta Lynn lit up the silver screen.

Coal Miners Daughters follows Lynn from her modest beginnings as one of eight children in a coal mining home in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky to her reign as the queen of country music.

A wife by the age of 15 and a mother of four by the age of 19, Loretta Lynn would record her first song, I’m a Honky Tonk Girl, at the tender age of 25. With her devoted husband, Oliver “Mooney” Lynn also affectionately known to Loretta as Doo, Loretta embarks on a journey from Washington State to Nashville to earn spot at the Grand Old Opry.

On Friday, the Montana Drive In in Estill Springs will bring Coal Miners Daughter starting Sissy Spacek, Tommy Lee Jones, and Beverly D’Angelo with cameos by Ernest Tubb, Roy Acuff, and Minnie Pearl back to the big screen. Spacek won the 1980 Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in the film. The film will play on Screen 1 at 8:30 p.m. followed by Steel Magnolias.
