LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — The Fayetteville Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) field office and Moore County Soil and Water Conservation District recently recognized Moore County’s 2024 Farmer of the Year, Gordon Millsaps. Officials say they chose Millsaps in recognition of his many years of excellent conservation practices.
Millsaps has held several Tennessee Department of Agriculture contracts in the past with things like cross fencing, stream crossings, pipeline, and exclusion fencing being installed, as a result. He rotates his Moore County cattle using these systems. Millsaps also enrolled in CSP last year and is continuing to improve his pastures by stockpiling cool season forage, forage testing, and overseeding with legumes.
The Moore County Soil and Water Conservation Board say they had their work cut out for them choosing the 2024 Farmer of the Year. They looked for several criteria including farmers who enhanced their farm while advancing through several programs offered, installed projects to standard or above, maintained projects installed, and continued to enhance their farm as well as addressing resource concerns as they arose.
“With his continued work towards practicing great conservation, the Fayetteville NRCS Field Office, and Moore County SWCD board are happy to announce Mr. Millsaps as the 2024 Farmer of the year for Moore County,” they said.
