LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — Basketball is a team sport and different players find their groove on different nights. It’s the nature of the beast. On Friday, perennial high scorers Ally Sharpe and Emma Dye both put together a stellar 15-point game but it was freshman Emmeree Greenway who had the storyline of the night. The freshman came alive in the second period — scoring 10 of Moore County’s 23 points to help send the Raiderettes into halftime with a 34-24 lead.
Raiderettes manage 23 second period points
Moore County took the lead from the opening stanza and never took their feet off the gas. They outscored Huntland 11 to six in the first period. Abbie Bateman and Dye led in the first period with four points each followed by Paisley Kelly with three.
Both teams put their feet on the accelerator in the second period with Moore County attempting to shock-and-awe with 23 points while the Lady Hornets tried to keep up with 18. Greenway came off the bench and led with 10 points. Sharpe swished her first point of the night after being uncharacteristically quiet in the first period. She managed a trey, a basket, and one from the line. Dye also added seven — a trey and two from the floor.
The Raiderettes went into the locker room leading by 10, 34-24.
Raiderettes play suffocating second half defense
There’s been bad blood between these two teams in years past with multiple wins coming down to blocked shots and buzzer beaters in the final second. It’s a trend the Raiderettes defense seems determined not to repeat.
They held Huntland to just seven third period point while mounting 11. Sophomore Harley Hart led with five points followed by Bateman and Greenway with a basket each and Alexus Hornaday with two from the line.
Despite the fact the Raiderettes went into the final stanza leading by 14, they weren’t content to coast. The offense hummed while the defense wore the Lady Hornets down. Moore County put up another 19 points while holding Huntland to just five. Sharpe led in the fourth with seven points followed by Dye with four. Bateman, Ellie Carter, Brooke Ledbetter, and Brenley Tucker all added a basket each.
At the buzzer, the Raiderettes notched a 64-36 win that lifted them to 2-2 in District 9A play.
Ally Sharpe and Emma Dye led with 15 points each followed by Emmeree Greenway with 12. Abbie Bateman added another eight. Harley Hart added five and Paisley Kelly managed three more. Ellie Carter, Brooke Ledbetter, and Brenley Tucker all scored a basket each.
The Raiderettes scored 46 from the floor, 12 from the perimeter, and six from the line. They were six of nine (67%) from the free throw line. For comparison, Huntland scored 22 from the floor, and 11 from the line. The Raiderettes held them to single perimeter shot.
Weather-permitting, the Raiderettes are schedule to play Fayetteville in Lynchburg on Tuesday. •
