Raiders mount second half comeback to beat Hornets 53-49

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — The Huntland Hornets came in to the MCHS Gym determined to beat the home team despite playing with just six players. And they almost managed it, but the resilient Moore County Raiders came back in the fourth quarter to walk away with a 53-49 District 9A win.

Moore County drew first blood and notched 16 first period points while holding the Hornets to 12. Cooper Dickey led in the first with seven points followed by Colton Morey with four. Anderson Sharpe swished the first trey of the game and Braylynn Hill also added a basket.

Huntland gained the momentum in the second period — scoring 16 while holding the Raiders to just six to gain the lead heading into the locker room. Morey, Hill, and Drew Hardison all scored in the second to send Moore County into halftime trailing, 28-22

Morey comes alive in fourth to help lift Raiders to victory

The third period was a straight up battle with the Raiders and Huntland trading shots and turnovers. Sharpe did the heavy offensive lifting for Moore County with 10 of the Raiders 14 third period points. Morey and Tristyn Gray added the other four points. The Raiders headed into the final stanza trailing by five points.

Morey came alive in the fourth quarter — putting up 10 of Moore County’s 17 points with Gray adding three more and Liles and Hill adding two each.

At the final buzzer, Moore County managed a four-point, 53-49, win. The victory lift’s them to 2-2 in District 9A play.

Colton Morey led with 18 points followed by Anderson Sharpe with 13. Copper Dickey scored seven. Braylynn Hill added six more. Tristyn Gray swished five and Drew Hardison and Deacon Liles both added two points each.

Moore County shot 32 points from the floor, 18 from the perimeter, and another six from the line. They were six of nine from the free throw line for 67 percent. For comparison, Huntland scored 24 from the floor, 12 from the perimeter, and 13 from the line. They shot 13 of 20 from the charity stripe for 65 percent.

Weather-permitting, the Raiders will rematch with Fayetteville in Lynchburg on Tuesday. •
