Tims Ford Polar Plunge happens Jan. 24

Cold water has a way of waking us up – not just in the gasp-for-air sense, but on a cellular level. Cold plunging, whether in a lake, river, or stock tank, has been shown to activate the vagus nerve, reduce systemic inflammation, and improve circulation. When the body meets cold, it shifts from fight-or-flight into a rapid recalibration, training the nervous system to respond to stress more efficiently. In a world where most of us live chronically overstimulated, that reset matters.

Research suggests regular cold exposure can help reduce inflammation, improve mood, and even support immune function by increasing norepinephrine and dopamine levels — the same neurotransmitters associated with focus, resilience, and emotional regulation. In other words, cold plunging isn’t just about endurance or bragging rights; it’s about learning how to stay calm, present, and regulated when conditions are uncomfortable. That skill translates far beyond the water.

And what better time than the new year to give it a try.

On Saturday, January 24, the Friends of Tims Ford plan their annual Polar Plunge at 10 a.m. It’s a fundraiser for the area group. The cost is $30 per person. Kids 16 and under can plunge for free. Registration includes a cool Tims Ford beach towel and hot cocoa for everyone. Those interested should meet a the boat ramp near the Lakeview Marina in Tims Ford State Park. To register, click here.

The Friends of Tims Ford State Park is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) volunteer organization that collaborates with Tims Ford State Park. They continually help Tims Ford State Park improve visitors experiences through volunteer and financial assistance.

That’s where local stewardship comes in. Our state parks are not just scenic backdrops; they are living systems that require care, advocacy, and community investment to remain accessible and healthy. Groups like Friends of Tims Ford play a critical role in preserving these spaces — supporting trail maintenance, conservation efforts, educational programs, and long-term sustainability so future generations can experience the same sense of awe and connection.

Each year, Friends of Tims Ford meet with the park liaison to discuss what they can do to help. Whether it’s volunteering as extra hands for major park events, donating food and supplies for holiday events or assisting with purchasing needed supplies, they are always there to make our area gem a better place to experience.

The Polar Plunge fundraiser is a perfect meeting point of all of this: personal health, collective resilience, and love for place. By taking a brief dip into discomfort, participants are directly supporting a park that gives so much back to this community year-round. It’s a small act with a ripple effect — strengthening bodies, calming nervous systems, and ensuring that one of our region’s most treasured natural resources continues to thrive.
