In small towns like ours, traditions aren’t just held – they’re handed down. They move from one family to another, from one generation to the next, gathering stories along the way. That’s the spirit behind this year’s Lynchburg Ornament Exchange, part of Christmas in Lynchburg, an event designed to bring neighbors together through the simple magic of exchanging something meaningful. The idea is as old-fashioned as it is heartfelt: you bring an ornament, and in return, you take home one that once hung on another Lynchburg family’s tree.
You can participate in one of two ways.
Prior to Christmas in Lynchburg, drop off your favorite vintage, modern, or homemade ornament at Farmer’s Bank, Moore County Bank, or the Jack Daniel’s Employee Credit Union and receive a voucher from the teller. Or on the day of the event, drop off your ornament at the gazebo from 12-1 p.m. and receive a voucher.
Each ornament will be added to the Lynchburg Community Tree, which will be displayed during Christmas in Lynchburg on December 6 at the Lynchburg Gazebo. Everyone will return from 1-3 p.m. and pick an ornament from the tree to take home and display on your own Christmas tree.
Whether your contribution is a whimsical handmade creation or a cherished little treasure tucked away in storage for years, you’re sharing a small piece of your family’s Christmas with someone else.
There’s no competition, no ranking, no rules beyond kindness – just the joy of selecting something that once meant enough to someone else that they wanted to pass it on. It’s an old-fashioned form of connection, the kind that thrives best in a place where people still know one another’s names.
The true magic of an ornament swap isn’t the ornament itself; it’s the story it carries. Maybe you’ll choose something homemade by a local child. Maybe you’ll find a delicate glass bauble that reminds you of your grandmother’s tree. Maybe you’ll pick up something quirky that sparks a conversation or becomes the start of a new tradition. In a town like Lynchburg, nothing stays anonymous for long – these little treasures have a way of revealing neighbors, bridging generations, and reminding us that even the smallest objects can hold a piece of who we are.
At its heart, this event is about community – about slowing down long enough to share, to receive, and to remember that the holidays were always meant to bring people together. So, dust off an ornament, drop it by one of the participating banks, or tuck it in your purse the day of the event and join us in making this first Lynchburg Ornament Exchange a reflection of what Lynchburg does best: bringing heart, heritage, and hometown spirit to everything we do.
This event is sponsored by the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce and The Lynchburg Times. •
