LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — It’s Saturday afternoon and after a 30-minute delay to check and re-check the results for accuracy, it’s awards time at the 34th Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. That’s what sometimes necessary in a competition where the winner is usually decided by less than a single point.

The 2023 edition is no different. After a long list of awards, Master of Ceremonies Chip Chapman announced that Uncle Pig’s Barbecue Pit of New Jersey is this year’s Grand Champion of The Jack. The victory earn them a $25,000 prize and an automatic initiation to defend their crown in 2024. They beat Reserve Champion B’Mackin’ BBQ of California by 1.1496 points. The Reserve Champion receives a $10,000 prize.

Uncle Pig’s Barbecue Pit placed ninth in Brisket, second in the Pork, and first in Pork Ribs on their way to the Grand Championship. The Reserve Champion also placed fourth in Pork and second in Pork Ribs.

To compete in this year’s Barbecue both teams won a state championship with a minimum of 25 competing teams, or a competition with more than 50 teams battling in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Butts, Chicken and Beef Brisket. The final competitors were then selected during a blind drawing of all eligible teams in August. Additionally, automatic invitations were given to the 2022 Jack Daniel’s Grand Champion and this season’s grand champions from Memphis in May, The American Royal World Series of Barbecue Open, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest.
