HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Cole Taylor went 3-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases to pace the Moore County Varsity Raiders to a convincing 15-5 victory over the Rocket City Varsity Rockets on Friday.
The victory allowed the Raiders to sweep Rocket City Academy this season. Moore County also beat them 15-5 at home on April 3.
The Raiders’ offense exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Kohlby Williams and Deacon Liles each doubled home two runs during the outburst, while Taylor added a two-run single and Jace Deal drove in another. By the time the dust settled, Moore County had sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
Taylor was one of three Raiders to record three hits on the day, joining Deal and Jose Garcia in that category. Cody Burton, Liles, Williams, and Nick Smith each contributed multiple hits as Moore County piled up 18 total.
Rocket City drew nine walks and swiped eight bases but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The Rockets grabbed the lead in the first on an Andrew Cook double, but Moore County answered immediately. Garcia singled home a run, and two more scored on an error to give the Raiders a 3-1 advantage they never relinquished.
Carter Zerhusen got the win on the mound, working two innings before Braylynn Hill came on in relief and struck out four over three frames.
Moore County returns to action on Friday against Eagleville in Rutherford County. They return home on Monday with a the first game in the Eagleville series. •
